Pasadena MLK Community Coalition - Keeping the Legacy of Martin Luther King Alive!

And for Our 2013 Essay Contest, the Winner Is…

Tuesday night Principal Gregory White opened the auditorium at Altadena Elementary School for parents, principals and friends to gather and enjoy an evening of oratory skill. Nine students competing in the 2012 Pasadena MLK Annual Essay Contest read from their notable essays as the final task in the contest. Judges were on hand to listen and evaluate the final places for each division.

The students selected at finalists were Victor Hoffman, Janelle Johnson and Kacie Ossmen (elementary division); Jordan Bray, Johanna Dickie, and Axel Tanner (middle school division) and Madeleine Cameron, Patsy Estrada and Hyun-Soo Kim (high school division). Each of these outstanding students shared some insightful observations regarding society, justice and ways to better our communities. Each strode to the podium, swallowed whatever jitters they felt and provided a very competitive evening. And…well, I’d hate to be one of the judges with the task of choosing a “winner.”

The final results will be announced on the Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration January 21, 2013 beginning 9:30 am at the Jackie Robinson Center, 1020 North Fair Oaks Ave. Pasadena 91103.

Essay Finalists Reading, Tuesday December 11 at 6:30pm

And the winner is…

We’re getting close to announcing our winners among the finalists. Of course, everyone who entered is a winner and we did have some amazing essays and art work submitted this year. (In the past, each new wave of student writers has raised the bar of excellence higher, and this year was no different!)

If you’re a finalist, you’ve received a letter to share your essay in an evening of student readings. Of course, we invite the entire community to enjoy an evening of thoughts provoked by the work and philosophy of Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.

What are our young people thinking in this new era of bipartisanship and strife in our globalized world? What do they think about our local community and efforts to uphold the rights and opportunities for all individuals equally? We invite you to find out!

Join us at 6:30pm, December 11 in the Main Auditorium/Gymnasium at Altadena Elementary School, 743 E. Calaveras Street Altadena 91001
