Announcing the 2013 MLK Essay and Art Finalists and Winners!

Blue Ribbon Finalists Image2And the winners areLast night the Martin Luther King Essay Contest finalists and Art Contest winners came out for a public reading of their essays and display of their art.  Students were asked to respond to and interpret this year’s theme through words and art:  “Explain how Dr. King dedicated his life so others may enjoy liberties he was denied. Considering his unselfish legacy, what are you doing to leave our culture in a better position for those who come after you?”  Hundreds of entries were submitted; and last night, the finalists and their families came out to share their work publicly.

Friends, family, and community members were awestruck by the students’OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA presentations and illustrations.  They were equally inspired by their awareness and articulation of American history and social justice issues and the connections they made with their academic, personal, and philanthropic plans for the future.  Dr. David L. Jacobs, Program Director of the MLK Community Coalition mentioned that the evening was an “historic moment” as the year 2013 marks the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and the bombings of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama,  all defining moments for the Civil Rights Movement.

Please see the list of finalists for the 2013-2014 Martin Luther King Coalition Essay Contest and the list of winners for the Art Contest below.  For more pictures from the event, click here.  Also, mark your calendars for January 20, 2014, the citywide MLK Holiday Celebration on January 20, 2014, where we will find out the placing of the essay finalists.

“Legacy of a Dream” Film for Students

King PhotoIdeal for acquainting a new generation with the man behind the dream of equality for all, Legacy of a Dream is a 24 minute film that uses selected footage from the 180 minute Academy Award nominated documentary “KING: A Filmed Record; Montgomery to Memphis” to present a shorter account of Dr. King’s non-violent campaign for civil rights and social justice. It uses only original newsreel and other primary material, unvarnished and unretouched, and covers the period from the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955 through his assassination in 1968. This film has a powerful narration spoken by James Earl Jones and provides an excellent overview of the struggle for civil rights and “the right to protest for right.”

Edmund W. Gordon, John M. Musser Professor of Psychology, Emeritus Yale University and founder of Head Start, after viewing declared, “…a splendid documentary. I would enthusiastically endorse the idea of making access to this material available to school children in middle and high school.” Richard Kaplan, the producer, says, “This is an opportunity to acquaint a new generation with an essential chapter of our history.  As the philosopher George Santayana has said “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”" Elizabeth Sheldon, Vice President of Kino Lorber, “LEGACY OF A DREAM is a rare resource of archival material that will bring Dr. King to life for a new generation.”

Free Streaming and downloading available to all students and classrooms in America and Canada. For more information, visit http://alivemindcinema.com/legacy/.

The original newsreel segments are framed by celebrity narrators Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, Ben Gazzara, Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones, Burt Lancaster, Paul Newman, Anthony Quinn, Clarence Williams III, and Joanne Woodward.  The movie was produced by Ely Landau.  Richard Kaplan was the associate producer in charge of production.

When first released, it was shown in theaters as a “one-time-only” event on March 24, 1970 for one night only. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, Features.  In 1999, this film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in its National Film Registry.

After its “one-time-only” showing it was occasionally seen on commercial television and for a short period released for home video. Then for many years it was no longer available and rarely seen. Finally, in 2010 it was released on DVD for home video use on a limited basis and KING was once again available after 40 years of being a “lost” film. In 2012 it was restored and remastered and the film is available once again both on DVD and Blu-ray.
